GIFTED PROGRAM
Welcome to Toussaint Louverture Elementary’s gifted program! This year, so far, we have read about various cultures, traveled to a myriad of locations, created travel brochures capturing stupendous adventures, and immersed ourselves with a plethora of newfound knowledge. Based on the content-model, our gifted department enriches students’ educational experience by incorporating their reading curriculum into advanced academic projects that are anchored to the sunshine state standards of our elementary social studies curriculum. As a result, the possibilities of the methods the instructor has to deliver the gifted instruction are endless.
The students of each of the different grade levels utilize the Houghton-Mifflin reading series, in addition to reading various trade, chapter books, and resources such as the newspaper and internet. Furthermore, the students make the literature come alive in exciting ways, such as presenting themselves as different characters from the stories read during a particular theme. They are given the task to research their character first, and analyze possible reasons for their characters’ actions. The students then interview each other as the character they chose, creating a kind of discussion panel in which the other students ask questions from the audience. Our talk show was a huge success, and everyone really enjoyed the activity.

Many fabulous things are coming from Room 108. Whether we are representing the school in the spelling bee, viewing live children’s theatre presentations, or entering the world of virtual field trips, everyday is an exhilarating one in this program. As the gifted teacher, I hope to facilitate many more educationally profound experiences throughout this year.
